The anorectum plays an important role in regulation of defecation and in maintenance of continence [1]. The most widely used test for anorectal function is anorectal manometry. It measures pressures of the anal sphincter muscles, sensation in the rectum, and neural reflexes that are needed for normal bowel movements. Parameters studied by anorectal manometry are the rectoanal inhibitory reflex, anal resting pressure, sustained voluntary contraction of anal canal and rectal sensation [3]. Anorectal manometry is now available at multiple centres in India.

Analysis of Indications and Results of Anorectal Manometry in Two Tertiary Hospitals in India

It is a diagnostic test aimed at measuring the function of the esophagus and its lower esophageal sphincter valve formed by a muscle which opens to swallow food to the stomach to then close and avoid regurgitation both of food and acids from the stomach. For the performance of the test, that lasts no more than 20 minutes, the digestive specialist places a thin probe through the nose getting to the stomach of the patient. This probe is connected to a computer which registers the pressure made by the lower esophageal sphincter and the esophageal body.

Since its introduction in , high resolution anorectal manometry HR-ARM has increasingly replaced conventional anorectal manometry as the standard. After eliminating structural causes of fecal incontinence from the differential diagnosis , anorectal manometry may be used to evaluate deficiencies in sphincter function or anorectal sensation.
