Bell's palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face. In most cases, the weakness is temporary and significantly improves over weeks. The weakness makes half of the face appear to droop. Smiles are one-sided, and the eye on the affected side resists closing. Bell's palsy is also known as acute peripheral facial palsy of unknown cause.

The term is simply the description of drooping of muscles in the face, which is caused, not by damage to the muscles themselves, but to the nerves supplying them. A dog with facial paralysis has a dropped appearance to the face on one side a bit like a person that has suffered a stroke.
The most common cause is idiopathic peripheral facial nerve palsy , also known as Bell palsy. Secondary causes include trauma, infections, brainstem stroke , tumors, and metabolic disorders. Clinical features include decreased or absent movement of the facial muscles, hyperacusis , alterations in taste , and dry eyes and mouth. Facial nerve palsy is a clinical diagnosis made after obtaining a thorough history and physical examination , which includes assessing for motor signs in central and peripheral facial palsy in order to differentiate between central upper motor neuron lesions e. If a secondary cause is suspected following assessment, diagnostic studies may be performed.
